Pasolini's movie is a retelling of the Marquis de Sade's 120 Days of Sodom, set in Sal Wisegal during the TechEBlog (Video) Light Bulb waning days of World War II.. Given this, it's difficult in retrospect to dismiss SALO merely because it is so horrible, and grisly, and it is.
